Title

Alexander Ashford

Alexander Ashford was the 6th generation head of the aristocratic Ashford family and son of Edward Ashford. He specialized in genetic engineering and was responsible for advancing the "CODE:Veronica Project" in an attempt to lead his family name into further prosperity. He was responsible for the construction of the Umbrella Antarctic Base and served as its first director. His ultimate ambition was to create a "reincarnation" of the Ashford family's first matriarch; Veronica Ashford. This led to the birth of two twins, who were not his direct children. 1 2

History

During the early 1960s, Alexander’s father Edward began searching for a virus which could promote organic evolution. On December 4, 1966, the expedition and research team which Edward was a member of discovered a primordial virus hidden in a remote region of West Africa. The team named it the "Progenitor Virus", and Edward immediately began research. A fellow aristocrat and friend of Edward's named Oswell E. Spencer, who helped discover the virus, voiced his desire to use the virus for military use and application as a means to monopolize the military market.

CODE:Veronica Project (1968)

In March 1968, Spencer, Edward and James Marcus founded a pharmaceutical company named "Umbrella Pharmaceuticals" in order to camouflage their research of the Progenitor virus for military purposes. Under Edward, the Ashford family had reached a peak of prosperity and fame. Virus research became the basis of Umbrella and was vital to its operations. Whoever made the most advancement in the field would undoubtedly hold a large concentration of power over the company. Initially Alexander worked with his father on research with the Progenitor virus but quickly realized that he lacked the virus research ability needed to advance the project, instead changing to genetic engineering research. 3

Knowing he would not be able to maintain the glory of the Ashford family set by his father, Alexander began the "CODE:Veronica Project" in order to create a clone of the Ashford family's progenitor, Veronica Ashford, who possessed a high level of beauty and intelligence. His plan was for this clone to continue his father's research and use the Progenitor virus to develop a new virus type in order for the Ashford family to grasp the leading edge in the field of biotechnology. 4

In July 1968, Edward died in an apparent accident while researching the Progenitor virus, contracting the virus himself. This event was actually an assassination orchestrated by Oswell E. Spencer in order to remove the competition posed by the Ashford family. His father's premature death was the largest miscalculation for Alexander since the successor of his father's research, the clone product of the CODE:Veronica Project, was supposed to be born before he died. Alexander became the 6th generation head of the Ashford family, and its position within Umbrella quickly declined. Less than a year after his succession, the Ashford family’s researchers lagged behind the rest of Umbrella in virus research and Alexander had led the family name into ruin. This allowed Oswell E. Spencer to take complete control over Umbrella. Feeling threatened by this, Alexander devoted all of his efforts to the CODE:Veronica Project in order to compete with Spencer.

Antarctic Base Construction (1969)

In February 1969, Alexander conceived the construction plan for the Umbrella Antarctic Base and ordered for it to be built using an abandoned transport terminal. He also secretly ordered for an underground laboratory to be built for the purpose of proceeding with the CODE:Veronica Project. The laboratory was inspired by the Ashford family manor in England, which was in turn based on designs requested by Edward from the architect George Trevor which were originally applied to the mansion owned by Spencer, whose family's Spencer Estate was the main inspiration for the designs. The facilities were completed 9 months later in November, officially owned by Umbrella. After making a large-scale move of the most modern research equipment, Alexander continued work on the CODE:Veronica Project as director of the base. Although Umbrella owned the property, the underground laboratory was kept secret from the company.

The Twins (1971-1983)

Eventually, Alexander managed to discover an inherited gene which determines the intelligence of man. With his expertise in genetic engineering, he was able to artificially manipulate the value of intelligence by recomposing the base alignment of the gene. Alexander incorporated the genes he prepared of Veronica from her mummified corpse in the Ashford family manor in England to the mature oocyte of a surrogate mother, with the nucleus removed. The ovum then entered the process of fertilization and began to divide, with the same genes being fused, producing a clone of Veronica's genes. His sperm was not introduced, meaning that he would not be the blood-parent of the resulting children. 5

In 1971 the twins Alfred and Alexia were born. The older brother Alfred possessed only slightly higher intelligence than the average person, and was deemed a failure. Alexia on the other hand was easily declared a genius and was deemed a resounding success. By the time Alexia was 9 years old, she had been chief researcher at the Umbrella laboratory in Germany. A year later, she graduated from a famous university as the top student. Immediately after she was then offered a new job by Umbrella as the chief researcher at the Antarctic Base, being greeted with open arms by the company for her superior intelligence. To commemorate her graduation, Alexander presented Alexia with a music box as a gift. 6

With Alexia in charge of the Ashford family's research and producing results with t-virus research and already working on a new virus known as the t-Veronica virus, Alexander believed that the restoration of the family to the fame achieved by his father was inevitable. However, Alexia herself was only concerned about her own prosperity, not the Ashford family's.

Disappearance (1983)

At some point, Alexander comissioned the development of an anti-B.O.W. weapon known as the Linear Launcher, possibly concerned about Alexia. Both Alexia and Alfred scorned their father for his incompetence. In 1983, the twins discovered the secret behind their birth. On March 3, Alexia subjected her father to experimentation and injected him with the t-Veronica virus. Alexander's body was heavily eroded by the virus, and he lost his reasoning ability. In order to control him, Alfred and Alexia sealed him in an underground cell beneath the base, where the workers later referred to him as Nosferatu. Officially, he was handled as a "disappearance" and was succeeded by Alfred as head of the family in April. The results from the administration of the t-Veronica virus to her father allowed Alexia to begin the second experiment.
