Title

Annette Birkin

Annette Birkin was the wife of William Birkin, and a fellow researcher of Umbrella Pharmaceutical. While a competent researcher in her own right, it was her husband's work that would change both of their lives. Her love for her husband and devotion to his work often took precedence over her role as a mother, despite her undying love for her daughter. 1 2 3 4 5

History

Early History

Initially a researcher at the Arklay Research Facility, Annette married Birkin while he was chief researcher at the facility, with their daughter Sherry Birkin being born in 1986. After Birkin received permission to begin the G-Virus Project, she was also allowed to participate.

Raccoon City Incident

After Birkin transferred to the newly constructed underground research facility beneath Raccoon City, Annette acted as an assistant in his research on the G-virus, as well as having the role of being in charge of communications with outside parties. Through this she became acquainted with Chief Brian Irons of the Raccoon City Police Department. Together they had a child, whom they named Sherry. In September 1998, operatives from the Umbrella Special Forces led an assault on her husband's laboratory with the intent of stealing his life's work.

During the brief engagement between William and the Special Forces, her husband was mortally wounded by gunfire. When she arrived, she found him dying with numerous gunshot wounds to his chest and upper body. Acting quickly, Annette rushed to gather medical supplies to treat her husband's wounds. Though before she could return, he had already injected himself with the G-virus and mutated into a living biological weapon. As Birkin's mutated self left the laboratory and attacked the Special Forces in the sewers, Annette quickly called her daughter Sherry on September 24 while she was at school and instructed her to take the locket containing the G-virus sample from their home before going to the police station, where Annette was to meet her, feeling that her remaining responsibility was to continue her husband's unfinished research with the sample contained in the locket.

Following the attack, Annette had come to view everyone with paranoid and suspicious eyes since she was aware of Umbrella's plots, suspecting Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield of being spies sent to retrieve the G-virus. However after learning that the mutated William was seeking out Sherry, she gave the two information to help her daughter, emerging from her trance and resolving to ensure that William is stopped. She was also aware of the identity of Ada Wong, confirming it after doing a background check. By then, she attempted to retrieve Sherry and her locket and escape from the city, and also kill William with special bullets against G. However, William had already mutated to the point where such bullets were useless, and maimed Annette in response. With her dying breaths, she gave Claire the instructions to develop the DEVIL vaccine to save Sherry, passing away with great guilt and regret after stating her last words; "Tell her... that even though I failed as a mother... I've always loved her...”
