Title

Leech

The Leech was a B.O.W. (Bio Organic Weapon) created by James Marcus through selective breeding during varietal improvement of the Progenitor virus and raised with paranoid love. It achieved dramatically rapid evolution unthinkable of Annelids including increased intellect and mimicry ability. An irregular mutant Leech also existed, this variety was of a separate species and was discovered in Raccoon City. 1 2

History

On February 3, 1978, Marcus injected four leech test subjects with the Progenitor virus. They underwent temporary physical agony but survived through predation, parasitism and breeding, a repetitive instinct that made them a top prospect for B.O.W. use to Marcus. Seven days later, a physical mutation was observed when they doubled in length. They safely finished laying eggs and their numbers increased to eight, but they began cannibalism due to an abnormal appetite. Marcus hastened to increase the food supply, but lost two.

On March 7, Marcus decided to give them live food, but three leeches died when the food fought back. However, the encounter showed signs of the leeches' attack pattern learning and beginning to gradually shift from individual actions to a colony while ceasing cannibalism. This "wonderful evolution" exceeded Marcus' expectations. On April 22, the leeches ceased individual behavior altogether except for predation and began constantly acting as a collective to an extent. Marcus gave them live food again and they attacked it surprisingly effectively.

Eight days later, staff at the Umbrella Executive Training Center noticed Marcus' experiment, prompting him to consider feeding humans to the leeches. On June 3, the leeches began to physically mimic Marcus, a feat he was overjoyed by. 3 Over the next ten years, Marcus continued experimenting with leeches as a B.O.W. host. He injected the Queen Leech with the t-virus in order to complete his research, but he was assassinated in 1988. However, the Queen Leech entered and took control of his body, leading to the "resurrection" of James Marcus via mimicry.

On May 10, 1998, the Queen Leech used leeches to cause an accident in the Arklay Laboratory during t-virus injection into the Tyrant (T-002 Type). This led to a leak of the virus and a biohazard outbreak within the facility and surrounding area. Around the same time, the Queen Leech also devastated the executive training center. On June 23, the Queen Leech used the leeches to attack the Ecliptic Express train, infecting the personnel and passengers as well as Delta Team of the U.S.S. (Umbrella Security Service).

Attributes

Physiology

The most glaring physical mutation in the Leech is its increase in size due to secretion of growth hormone. An eye-like organ also formed at the base of the body, while a large tooth-lined mouth resembling a lamprey eel formed on the other side capable of tearing flesh more than sucking blood. 4

Combat

The Leech preyed in coordinated groups and latched onto an animal in order to gouge with their huge mouths. Humans attacked by a group usually incurred injuries that made them die within several minutes. In addition, during this predatory action, it injected a fluid held in its body that contained a high concentration of t-virus, so a victim also had a very high probability of becoming a Zombie.

Mimicry

Groups of the Leech had the ability to mimic objects and people. The main subject of this mimicry was James Marcus. The leeches secreted an adhesive bodily fluid over their cuticle in order to mold together. This coating hardened as they fused together, but there was a limit to how long they could maintain this form and could only do it stationary. They act under common understanding as a collective intelligence . When approached by an outsider the leeches would break form to attack, retaining a somewhat human form, but the visage of Marcus became distorted and disappeared entirely. This form is known as Mimicry Marcus.
