History

In early B.O.W. research, Dr. James Marcus administered the t-virus he was developing into various animals and plants in an attempt to find a base organism most suitable for virus adaptation. The Lurker was a B.O.W. created through that process based on a frog chosen as an amphibian sample. The virus caused its tongue and jumping power to develop and enhanced its predatory instincts. 4

Although the Lurker's superior offensive capabilities met the standard and it displayed more utility than arthropods which merely enlarged, practical application was shelved due to the lack of development in intelligence and its predatory instincts causing a fatal defect of it indiscriminately targeting any approaching object as prey, factors that made control impossible. At an unknown time, the Lurker was somehow able to find refuge in the Arklay Treatment Plant and breed.

Later, a European Umbrella laboratory produced the Hunter γ that incorporated human genes into an amphibian egg, but its eyesight was completely lost and it lacked intelligence, signs of specific mutation patterns in the combination of the t-virus and tailless amphibians. These experiments showed there was little hope in manufacturing a controllable B.O.W. from an amphibian. As a result, amphibian B.O.W. development was instead considered for alternative practical applications that did not require intelligence, such as the Albinoid. 5

Following the biohazard caused by the t-virus leak in Raccoon City, some smaller Lurkers were recorded in the city's sewer system. It is unknown whether these subjects were irregular mutants caused by the biohazard or specimens that had reached the sewers from the treatment plant.

Attributes

The Lurker exhibited gigantism by growing to about 20 times its original size upon administration to the t-virus. Its digestive system developed to the point it could swallow a live human whole and its tongue was strengthened and became capable of knocking down a human. Its light-dependent sight degenerated with necrosis of its eyes and it developed sharp hearing as a substitute in order to sense the approach of prey, with the space where its eyeballs previously existed serving as a middle ear cavity. It also developed superior jumping power with the strengthening of its leg muscles.

The Lurker was completely impossible to control as a result of the virus' side-effect of increased aggressiveness. This caused the Lurker to develop an enhanced predatory instinct that made it prone to attacking anyone and anything in the vicinity, and no development in intelligence was observed due to its primitive amphibian brain.
