Classification

Accidental B.O.W.: "Plant 42"

Title

Plant 42

"Plant 42" was originally an unspecified insectivore plant species, this subject grew at an alarming rate when it became infected with the t-virus in the guardhouse following an accident at the Arklay Laboratory on May 11, 1998. It is named after the place of its discovery: observation point 42 in the guardhouse. 1

History

The predatory plant grew at point 42 of the Arklay Laboratory and was dubbed "Plant 42" accordingly by the remaining researchers at the Arklay Laboratory, who were forced by the Umbrella Corporation to report data on the mutant plant. Spreading over nearly two floors of the guardhouse and breaking through the floor and walls with its sheer girth, with its roots and vines spreading out into even larger areas, the creature would use its long vines to hunt and attack prey. Henry Sarton, one of the researchers at the laboratory, documented the growth and development of the organism in the Plant 42 Report. These chemical compounds were also one of its two sources of nutrients. 2

Sarton theorized that the t-virus alone was not the only source of Plant 42's immense growth, and suspected that chemicals in the water used in the underground aqua ring could possibly be another factor. This was backed up by Plant 42's roots spreading directly into the basement, feeding off the water and whatever chemicals it contained. Plant 42's main appearance is that of a large bulb with countless vines and tentacles protruding from it, covering the entire room. Like other plants infected with the t-virus, Plant 42 also exhibited newfound intelligence and became much more sentient, actively hunting for food through the use of it's vines, which by now had already spread throughout the ventilation system.

The data retrieved from Plant 42 which was sent was later analyzed by Umbrella researchers, who then decided to pursue a plant-based B.O.W. based on the plant. This project led to the development of the Plant 43 (or "Ivy") and the Ivy +YX.

Attributes

The t-virus granted Plant 42 a highly increased and developed intelligence, allowing it to act on its own judgement to preseve its own life. Although it could not move its trunk, it was able to lash out with tentacle-like appendages to ensnare prey and drain them of their blood for nutrients. It also generated many other self-defence mechanisms to protect itself from would-be attackers, including an acidic sap from its tentacles and petals. Plant 42's main weakness lay in it's vital insides, which it would expose when aggressive. The petal-like flaps covering its internal structure like a shield would open up. Like all plants, it was extremely weak to fire. 3 4 5
