Title

Ryan Howard

Ryan Howard was a former Umbrella Corporation researcher specialized in molecular biology and an expert in fossil DNA regeneration research. He was the father of Tyler Howard.

History

Howard's wife passed away due to illness immediately after their son's birth, and Howard raised him on his own. However, the two were soon rendered homeless due to the sudden freezing of Howard's research grants. He was contacted by Umbrella and offered a job in biological weapons development. Consequently, he was stuck in a laboratory every day and could never return home to his son. He kept working due to the great financial implications of his research's success, doing it all for his son.

The daughter of a fellow Umbrella researcher, Mary Gray, had an incurable blood disease her father tried to cure using the t-virus. He asked Howard to perform the procedure. They discovered shortly afterwards that her body completely adapted to the virus. From then on, Howard was in charge of prolonging her life and gave her constant injections of the virus through a remote device on her wrist. Due to Umbrella's collapse, he fled with all his research data and samples of the t-virus. However, his life completely changed the day he learned his son had joined the police without telling him then presumed killed in the line of duty in a 2005 bioterrorism incident in Minnesota. Afterwards, he secretly protected Mary Gray and kept her dosed with the t-virus even after she lost her parents. As he'd lost his son, he thought of her as his daughter.

He emigrated to Australia and became close to Ezra Sennet of Philosophy University who was passionate about increasing human intelligence. In exchange for facilities and funding, Sennet requested Howard to create a virus capable of this. However, Howard had other intentions for the virus. He knew B.O.W. (Bio Organic Weapons) research was morally unforgivable but believed he could create a virus able to resurrect his son. He assumed a position at the university as a professor of molecular biology and director of the fossil museum, also in charge of the research project for the "Irish Giant", a mummified humanoid fossil found more than a century before in a mine in Northern Ireland.

Using the t-virus and DNA samples from the Irish Giant, he believed he had the skills to combine them and create a new variant able to bring his son back to life. He tried without success to find his son's body and only recovered a DNA sample, but it wasn't enough to test his theory. From that moment on he dedicated himself to changing the order of the world he perceived as cruel for killing his son. To him, using his knowledge and abilities in this way was his only purpose left in life. Over time, his passion for resurrecting his son transformed into the development of biological weapons and he was increasingly led by Gray, whose high IQ of 230 due to Howard's injections led her to become scheming and manipulative, convincing Howard of her dream of "resetting" humanity, an act he sympathized with due to the anger against humanity he felt over his son's apparent death.

Philosophy University Incident (Aug. 2010)

By 2010, Howard was using university students as test subjects to develop the new virus, but his actions led Sennet to request the investigative aid of Rebecca Chambers, an adviser to the BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance). In August, Howard was reunited with his son but his grief led him to believe he was an impostor aiming to steal the new virus. He later captured Sennet as a hostage and offered him in exchange for the case containing the new virus. A short scramble occurred when Sennet kicked a chair to knock Howard over, using the confusion to grab the case and escape.

Although Sennet escaped with the case containing Howard's virus, he proclaimed that Sennet would be unable to utilize it without his help and used  his escape as an example of the current humanity's cowardice. He released a Tyrant (T-103 Type) injected with the new virus in order to collect combat data against his son, Chambers and BSAA soldiers Chris Redfield, Piers Nivans and Sophy Home, but it was killed in the battle. As a last resort, he injected himself with the virus but was shot to death by his son before he could fully transform.
