RE7 Ending and Plot Discussion *SPOILERS*

Just some points:

  1. Mia was working for a company that developed the "E-Series" Eveline as a B.O.W. It was so powerful, they were transferring it to the Central American Branch as they feared it would be stolen by another corporation. This was when she broke free. Is this corporation Sheng-Ya Pharmaceutical? And by extension, the Umbrella Corps unit? Or a new, unnamed company?

  2. The E-series B.O.W was being developed way back in 2000, alongside help from the Hive/Host Capture force and presumably the unnamed Rival Company of the original Umbrella Corporation, plus possibly more corporations like the ones introduced in Umbrella Corps.

  3. Lucas was sending encrypted messages to an "unknown third party" during the events of RE7. Who could this have been? The Umbrella Corps agents were the ones making this observation, so it wasn't them he was communicating with. We know he was faking Eveline's influence over him. This one I'm VERY confused on.

  4. Who was that at the end of the game? In my opinion, it was very unlikely that it was Chris. He would be around 46 years old by this point, and that did not look like someone that old, nor did not look like Chris at all either. Chris is presumably still working for the BSAA. Or at least he was until 2014. Plus we don't know when Vendetta takes place; is it before or after RE7? Is "Redfield" HUNK? 3A-7? Are those two people one and the same? If so, why use Chris' name? I guess we'll find out in "Not a Hero."

  5. This is the first time we've seen the Umbrella Corps unit use the full name of the "Umbrella Corporation." We still don't know why they're doing this. Are they simply trying to carry on the original Umbrella's work? To what end? Spencer and his vision of godhood are dead.

  6. Why is the super-handgun kicked down to you in the finale called "Albert"?

Basically, my biggest confusion is what corporation was Mia working for, and what the hell the Umbrella Corps unit and Sheng-Ya are up to? We might get more answers when Heavenly Island wraps up next month, and definitely from "Not a Hero" in May.

1. and 2. The HCF connection makes it seem like the company that made and transported Eveline to Lousiana was in fact the "rival company" of Umbrella that Wesker worked for.

3. That would be the same company. The messages are the ones where Lucas points out it being fucked up that the "bioweapon" wants to start a family. At least that's how I interpreted it. Could be that they talking about just Lucas's crazy messages to Ethan, but probably not.

4. That was indeed Chris Redfield, as shown in the credits. New voice actor as well. It seemed plausible for him to be in that age range, I don't think it's a big deal. They're also having a bit of a different art style and probably a new render for Chris with this game so he looks a bit different. It's the same thing as with how the characters look a bit different in the older games and the newer ones, and I don't mean graphically but with the art style (Remake Chris compared to Resident Evil 5 Chris and so on). The same thing is done with the Vendetta film as well, and all the characters have a bit of a different style to them. I don't know how much Vendetta will cover, but the Not a Hero DLC will very likely be the answer to why Chris is with this "Umbrella Corporation" now.

5. I don't even remember seeing a unit called the "Umbrella Corps", even in that game. The game is called that of course, but I thought the mercenaries were working for just the named companies like Sheng-Ya and so on. Was one of them actually called just Umbrella Corps? I can't remember.

6. Because it's just a reference, I assume? Seems like a plausible name for a powered handgun regardless. Interestingly, if you play another playthrough and examine the Albert handgun (you unlock it after beating the game), it's a STARS Samurai Edge with even the STARS logo on the side of it.

In terms of other plot discussion, Alyssa from Outbreak is now confirmed to be alive, yay! And Clive from Reveleations has written a book, also yay I guess!

Lucas's intercepted emails credit his correspondents with breaking Eveline's hold over him, as well as asking if they'd deliberately programmed Eveline to want a family. Presumably Lucas is dealing with Eveline's original creators, or at least thinks he is.

(Although as a weird side note, Mia and Alan are identified in a file on the ship as being part of a "Special Operations Division," which is a real-world group within the U.S. Secret Service. I was pretty sure for a while that they were going to end up as part of the DSO.)

I'm also not convinced it's actually Chris at the end of the game. "Redfield" has lighter hair, is visibly a lot younger, and is way off-model even considering the new look for Chris in Vendetta. I'm content to wait for "Not A Hero" to see what's going on there, but I'll be annoyed if it's legitimately supposed to be a sort of heel turn for Chris.

I'm mostly just annoyed that Umbrella Corps is apparently canon. I'd been hoping otherwise, given how much of a dumpster fire that game turned out to be.

I feel like that's general enough of a name for a division in a company that it really could be a part of anything.

I don't think the Vendetta look is supposed to be a "new look" but just the art style of that animation studio that did the film. Chris's look changed a lot when going from the older games to Resident Evil 5 as well, so it could be the same now as well, as it would be fitting when going to a new "era" with the games again. I'm sure it's Chris but I'm also pretty sure it isn't a heel turn either.

Say what you want about the game itself but I didn't think anyone would fault it for its additions to the story. Really interesting background stuff for the rivalries of various pharmaceutical corporations and how Umbrella's fall affected them. Some nice ties to Heavenly Island as well.

But back to Resident Evil 7... did anyone else get the idea that Ethan was infected for most of the game? Your hand and leg just pop right back into place and you're seeing Eveline's hallucinations as well.

1) It's "Umbrella Co." They own the Umbrella Corps and are a "middleman" organization between the 8 other bioweapon companies we know of. They developed the Zombie Jammer and sold it to those companies.

3) The third party is most likely the "commander" from UMBRELLA CORPS. Unless it's someone completely new to be revealed only in the DLC.

4) It's not Chris. Pure and simple.

5) We have BIO4's background story concerning reviving Umbrella to contend with, as well as what happened to the rival company once Wesker faked his death and moved to TRICELL. REV2 also leaves us to think about the "Gregor Project" and UMBRELLA CORPS features several references to Wesker including his commanding during multiplayer missions.

6) It's a modified Samurai Edge replica named after Albert Wesker.

The unit seen in Heavenly Island is Sheng-Ya's own special forces unit. The Japanese version of UC makes this a little more clear, as it says that the "company" emblems we see in the game are actually "Special Forces Emblems", a fact omitted in English The unit dispatched in Heavenly Island is merely Sheng-Ya's own mercenaries, not the Umbrella Corps.

Thanks for the input guys

I guess "Not a Hero" will hopefully give us some answers as to what the H is going on with Umbrella Co.

Thanks for the clarification on Sheng-Ya, News Bot. I was getting confused as to what mercenaries were whose and the nature of Umbrella Co. I'm still finding it hard to keep it straight since they all look the same.

Hopefully we find out if the unnamed company that developed the E-series with help from HCF and others is Sheng-Ya or a new corporation all together. News Bot, you're saying that the company Mia was working for WAS Umbrella Co?

Yes, Umbrella Co. created Eveline.

In the credit it says Chris Redfield. If so that will make the game a little disapointing to me after they have pretty much hung on to the same voice actor all these years and same facial features. But i think thd game was awesome.

It says Chris Redfield because it's a red herring. It's a setup for a reveal in "Not A Hero." Remember, the story isn't finished, only Ethan's.

I'm leaning towards it actually being Chris. The appearance and voice change I'd chalk up to the staff. A lot of the recent installments have had the habit of making weird alterations to the characters faces and the series is super spotty with consistent casting. WHY he's doing these things I'm not sure. My hope is that Not A Hero clears things up in the Spring, but for now I do believe that's him. (As a side note: The credits confirmed his JP voice is Hiroki Tochi,  same guy who done Chris's Japanese dub since Revelations. I dunno if that adds any support but hey, worth a mention.)

What was up with the phone vibration noise after the credits? Any ideas?

I'm having trouble connecting all of this together in my head. Can someone explain the connections between Evelyn's creators, Umbrella Co., and who Lucas was talking with/got the serum from?

I'm just going to run through my experience and understanding, and please fill in the blanks/correct my misunderstandings:

I didn't see a single Umbrella Co. logo on that entire ship. The company wasn't mentioned by name in any of the files found as Mia in the VHS tape on the ship. Mia was working for a company whose name was not disclosed to us, only that she was working for a divsion within it called something along the lines of "Special Operations Division." She might not have even been working within that division, only as a "caretaker" for Evelyn.

After the flashback, fast forward to Ethan overhearing the radio chatter between two agents. They speak about how they're combing through the baker house. They identify themselves as being part of Alpha and Bravo teams. And my memory is spotty, but I think they also say something along the lines of "Who's responsible?" and the other agent says "Who do you think?" This is beside surveillance equipment and picture of Umbrella Co. helicopters, leading you to believe that Lucas or someone else was watching them, and that the radio chatter is from umbrella co. agents. They also discuss how Lucas has been sending encrypted messages to a third party, and how they think he's in the salt mines.

Going into the salt mine yourself, you discover a lab that Lucas has been using. There are emails you can read that are from Lucas to the creators of Evelyn (or at least to whom he thinks are the creators of Eveyln) thanking them for giving him a serum that releases him from her control. Umbrella Co. is not mentioned by name in any of these emails. There are also development notes that mention how development started on the E-series starting way back in 2000 with help from other companies including Umbrella's old Rival Company.

All of this, unless I'm mistaken and please tell me if I am, leads me to believe that Evelyn was created by the unnamed company Mia worked for. Lucas was given a serum from that same company, not Umbrella Co. I say this because of the "encrypted messages" that they said he was sending, presumably to the unnamed company who developed Evelyn. To me, it seems like the unnamed company and Umbrella Co. are two different entities and are at odds with each other.

Umbrella Co. created Eveline and were in contact with Lucas. Mia is an SOD agent. They observed the Bakers by helicopter, through Lucas' reports, and constructed the lab in the salt mine.

Umbrella Co. is most likely what Umbrella's rival company has become. They're also the organization behind "The Experiment" in UC. The connections with Wesker are made very apparent, particularly with the Albert-01R gun.

As stated by the Umbrella Co. agents, who do you think Lucas was sending encrypted messages to?

Probably "the commander."

As in the Umbrella Co. commander that might possibly be Albert Wesker? Seems odd that Umbrella Co. agents would be referring messages being sent to their own leader as "encrypted messages to a third party." Unless they were being kept in the dark on purpose.

Wesker was a third party during BIO4, too. There's nothing stopping someone in Umbrella Co. from making their own decisions, we saw much of that in the old Umbrella.

Good point.

I could be worng about this of course. If you look at Heavenly Island's most recent chapters, there are creatures that look like the molded. It takes place in 2014. We don't know how the manga will end, but Sheng-Ya agents are en route to the island to get the completed viral sample Dirk Miller was working on that looks like resutls in molded monsters.

Re7's files say in regards to the E-series development:

The project would never have existed were it not for the discovery in XXXXXX of XXXXXXXXXX, the remarkably progressed "vicariant evolution" fungus that we commonly term the "mutamycete."

Is it possible that Sheng-Ya will end up with a sample of the molded creature from the Heavenly Island manga, and that was the fungus they ended up calling "mutamycete"? I admit the dates don't really add up as well as it could, seeing as Eveline broke out of containment in the same year, and development started in 2000:

"This project was instigated in 2000 as one of several concepts for the company's NEXBAS (Next Generation Experimental Battlefield Superiority) initiative, working with technical assistance from H.C.F. to develop a bioweapon for neutralizing combatants en masse with minimal direct contact. NEXBAS was later folded, and all its assets diverted to this project."

However, this file seems to state that the IDEA for neutralizing combatants en masse started in 2000. Maybe they didn't get what they needed until 2014 with the molded looking creature caused by Dirk Miller in Heavenly Island. This would make the unnamed corporation Mia worked for the Sheng-Ya Pharmaceutical company, with many corporations, including Umbrella Co. trying to steal it, and ultimately being successful at the end of RE7 with Ethan being in their posession.

I'm making a lot of assumptions here as heavenly Island isn't even done yet, and there are holes in my reasoning. But I'm just brainstorming.

it could be Chris, reason being we don't know what is going on in the new animated movie, they could pull an ending where he gets brainwashed and a plastic surgery, that doesn't seem likely but knowing Capcom everything is possible...and both are coming at May. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it though..Chris, not Chris, i mean it's not a big wow either way

So the old rival company of Umbrella changed their name some time after Umbrella's fall... to Umbrella Corporation. They just stole their enemy's name then? I assume the Co. in Umbrella Co. stands for Corporation or Company at least (the logo seen in Resident Evil 7 had both "Umbrella Co." and "Umbrella Corporation"). Seems to be the final nail for the bloke in the end being Chris, as I really doubt he'd work for a company literally called Umbrella. That just leaves who the hell he actually is and what he's gaining from impersonating Chris. Doubt it's HUNK either, as he's got quite the reputation as the Grim Reaper so why abandon that, although the occupation would make sense.

Sheng-Ya's special forces arrive and are decimated once Sheng-Ya's own spy injects the virus. There are no references to bacteria, mold or fungus in the manga.

Yeah, I think they could've tied it up better but I guess they want to focus on Umbrella Co., with the other eight companies as fodder and plot devices. The entire story of this game is predicated on the LNG Annabelle being attacked en route to Central America by one of these companies, for instance.

I think we'll be seeing much more industrial and corporate espionage. I'm happy with that since it's my favorite aspect of the series story. Suntech and Aeolus Edge seem to have a branch rivalry similar to what we saw between Umbrella USA and Umbrella Europe.

So Suntech and Aeolus Edge aren't separate companies, but instead branches of Umbrella, Co.? I need a damn chart for this...

were they attacked? I only remember vague comments from Alan saying "it's my fault she escaped" and Mia says "yea, but I'm not going to let you die." I assumed Alan just messed up and she got out due to his negligence.

it would make sense they were attacked, since a file says that Eveline is so powerful, other companies want her. I don't remember seeing evidence of an attack. I thought the ship exploding was just due to Eveline.

Suntech and Aeolus Edge are separate companies, I said they had internal rivalries reminiscent of Umbrella USA and Umbrella Europe's rivalry.

Mia Winters: "Alan, you're getting worse."
Alan Douglas: "She must have infected me during the attack."

On top of that, the credits show a little diagram of the ship following a route. Halfway along that route is marked with a giant X, when the attack took place. It's not revealed how Eveline got out, though. Presumably Alan messed up in the confusion or ticked her off with his loose lips that eventually get him killed.

Right! Could it be possible that Chris-not-Chris's team and the company that made Eveline are separate, and that it was his team that attacked the tanker? Would at least make a nice fairly self contained short mission for the DLC.

So News Bot, do you feel like Wesker is actually alive due to recent hints in Umbrella Corps. and Resident Evil 7?

Albert Wesker is dead. He may have a clone however.

It could, but I don't see them doing that without actually making the distinction. Interestingly, the only group in the entire series to wear all-black fatigues is HCF and they're mentioned for the first time since GS2 in this game.

Could the Umbrella Corps. be the succesor to the H.C.F. under Umbrella Co.? Considering the H.C.F's involvement in RE7, a Wesker clone potentially being the "Commander" of the Umbrella Co. and the H.C.F. previously being Wesker's own personal para-military group, could this be the case?

Very interesting developments. I need to replay it. Can't wait to see where the story goes from here in Not a Hero and future sequels.

Could be. I need to replay the game to refresh everything. I've heard that the D-Series cases actually have a "Tentsu" label, which could mean Mia and Alan work for someone besides Umbrella. That would be nice.
