Well, they are certainly taking a different direction...

If played correctly, it could be an interesting direction, and just the thing we need to kick the series into high gear again.

Absolutely, it certainly needed a change but I wasn't expecting a first person virtual reality experience. It looks like the rumour that Capcom going back to its survival horror roots are true. I am very intrigued to see what Capcom can deliver.

I wonder how much of this is actually representative of the game and how much is merely concept.  And I wonder if this will only be first person.  The fact that this is built on a brand new "RE" engine makes me think (hope) that they have included multple perspectives that you can switch between.

It'll be first person only. Wouldn't kinda be any sense to the VR thing otherwise.

In any way, I'm very much looking forward to the game. Even though I probably won't be playing it in VR.

They might have a third person mode for non-VR players.

I meant that they've already said it's going to be all first person, in the interviews following the Sony press event. Which is for the better, I think. To choose one and make that the best it can be, rather than have two and half-ass them.

I'm a little salty that I played "The Kitchen" demo at last year's show without knowing it was leading into an RE title. It feels almost like trickery.

Tried the demo this morning after waiting all night for it to show up on the PSN store. I'm loving the atmosphere, even if it does seem very similar to what Silent Hills was going to be. Despite being first person, though, it definitely does feel like an RE game at its core. I'm really looking forward to more info as the year goes on. (And, on a side note, I think the subtitle choice in both regions is pretty brilliant and really fits with the soft reboot this might end up being.)

I'm very puzzled about who might be the woman they talked about at the beginning. "She's back"? Whom? Alex? The music was very very reminiscent of the way Metal Gear used to musicalize its trailers. And this man looks a hella lot like Spencer, though I know, Spencer's dead.

I don't know how to feel about it yet, I have to see more of it.

The original Wesker, perhaps?

The general reaction to this seems mixed. I don't understand this. People have been complaining that Resident Evil needs to go into a horror direction like it used to be. Now that they do it they're nitpicking it and complaining that it looks too much like Outlast/Silent Hill. I for one am excited for this new installment. They're scaling back the game, making it clausterphobic again.

I think the demo is acting more like a prologue, setting up for the main game instead of being a small section of it. I base this on what seems like the ending to the demo. But I didn't play it myself, so I wouldn't know if the ending can change.

People are complaining because it's something to do, most of the time. They have, in their minds, their idea of horror. Whatever it is to them, this doesn't match it, so they complain. It's the closest we're gonna get without doing a full-blown reboot and starting at 1 again, but it's not the idea of horror they have in their minds. That's all.

It's pretty much that. A lot of the time, when people complain about something like this, it's because it doesn't match the perfect, crystalline ideal they carry around in their brains, or that they're annoyed that they're older than they used to be, and thus unable to generate the same unbuoyed enthusiasm as they could when they were younger. They're upset at their own cynicism.

For my money, I figure the "she" in "she's back" is probably new, but if it's a returning character I'm going to guess it's Lisa Trevor. I will wager five Internet Funbucks on this (note: not real money).

The biggest criticisms I've seen is that it's in first person view and that it's new characters (which I, for one, am really glad about it). Don't get me wrong, I love the old cast to death, but I do feel like the series needs to inject some new protagonists in there without relying on the biggest old names at the same time.

So far, after seeing the demo and the trailers, I'm very intrigued in a way I wouldn't be if this was like RE6 or even Revelations 2. Part is totally because of how disconnected it seems, and wanting to know how it all ties together with the rest of the series.

The "she" could be Annette Birkin, perhaps a tie-in with the Resident Evil 2 remake. There's a 90% chance "she's" new, so I'm just really throwing that out to goof off.

I just watched a playthrough of the demo. Does the game really have ghosts in it? It looks like it might and if it does it may actually ruin it for me.

Did anyone else notice at the end of the one ending, the mention of "The Family will welcome you back on January 24th".

I have to wonder if it's the same "The Family" mentioned in RE6.

Probably. The picture with the helicoptor has an Umbrella symbol on it. I imagine they are sticking to the Neo-Umbrella/Family plot. Whole world-wide global control conspiracy.

It was confirmed that there aren't ghosts.

That's good. But in one of the demos I've seen there is an apparition on the camera that appears on the stairs. I wonder what it was, if it was anything.

Confirmation that the demo was a one off and it's content won't be in the main game. Also confirmed that the game will take place after resident evil 6.

Could always be a flashback, ala BIOHAZARD 5.

So people are saying that the "she" who's back is a dead person? Lisa or Annette? I mean, it does take place after RE 6 so I don't really think that's possible. Also those are fairly minor characters so I dunno what's the point of bringing them back in the first place. The soft reboot vibes tell me that it's someone entirely new, though, and we already know that for the protagonist. The picture with the wheelchair dude does look an awful lot like it's taken in the room where Wesker kills Spencer, but it's probably going to be a new character as well. Who knows at this time how it ties in, the only connection is the Umbrella chopper, but given that the game takes place post RE 6, I really have no idea what we're supposed to get out of that.

I also don't think that the "family" refers to The Family here. It's most likely just the crazy hillbilly family that's talked about in the tape in the demo. If it's the soft reboot it seems to be, continuing something like the Simmons Family plotline would pretty heavily clash with that. Where was it confirmed that there were no ghosts? I didn't think so in the first place, but there are some stuff in the demo that kinda makes you think that there's something supernatural going on. But even the actual trailer hints very heavily at viral infection, so who knows.

I gotta say the whole thing has me cautiously optimistic.  The first person mode dosnt bother me.  I was a little dissapointed to find out from the demo that the guys with flashlights were filming some type of ghost hunters show.  I though perhaps they might be government agents or police detectives...sort of bring the series back to its roots that way.  In any case Im looking forward to it.

I haven't had a chance to look at videos of the demo yet but from the trailer and the little I've read. It has my interest so far, I just hope it plays more like Condemned: Criminal Origins than Outlast.

Well it was confirmed that guns were in the game, so I don't think it'll play like Outlast.

My only complain so far is that it appears that no old characters will make a return.

Other than that I'm stocked.

I have absolutely no problems with person view, since I played games like Bioshock, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Dishonored and Alien: Isolation thoroughly.

But I sympathize with those who have natural motion-sickness problems from playing first-person games.
I used to have such problems back in the 90's but outgrew them somehow.
Not everyone else did, though.

I like the style and setting and direction. I also like how it is not a full reboot, nor does it ignore the series continuity. I'm ok with it being a separate story from the rest of the series so far while still having connections to it. That was what happened with Resident Evil 4, so we can kind of consider this game as the "3rd era" or RE games.

There are only 2 things that I hope don't happen:

1) They do not suddenly start bringing in supernatural elements, like what was originally planned for RE4. This series is based on super science gone wrong and deranged individuals trying to turn humans and animals into monsters. There should never be any elements beyond that creating the horror aspect. Leave that to series like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame. The only thing "supernatural" that the RE series should ever have in it is the complete defiance of known and accepted laws of physics and biology - which it already has. So I hope that what we see in the trailer and demo only LOOKS like it might be supernatural in origin, just like the original game and the REmake did, but only in appearance and feel, with biological horror being the only true threat beyond the player's fears of the unknown.

2) Do not ignore continuity going forward or leave plot threads from past games hanging. Things like Alex Wesker being on the loose, the reveal of the Family still being around, the possibility of the Organization still being active somewhere, and the possible revival of Albert Wesker or Umbrella itself, are all things that need to be addressed and closed out before the series fully moves on. It should always come back to Umbrella's legacy being responsible for new horrors (unless they ever bring Las Plagas in again), but beyond that being the gateway, they can always use new situations and environments beyond direct connections to Umbrella trying to take over the world. This game seems to be the beginning of that, going back to an isolated incident involving mutating viruses and things, but what was left over from the most recent games should be addressed and closed out before games such as this one become the norm for the series.

Hopefully, these two points will be taken care of. Beyond that, I'm looking forward to this new chapter with significant excitement.
